Tulum vs Playa del Carmen: Which Is Better and Where to Stay

Tulum and Playa del Carmen sit about an hour apart on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, but they feel like different trips. Playa del Carmen is a walkable beach town with a long pedestrian street, plenty of budget hotels and ferries to Cozumel. Tulum is spread out, more expensive and built around boutique hotels on a jungle-backed beach. Here’s how to choose, and where to stay in each.

Choose Playa del Carmen if you have five nights or fewer, don’t want to rent a car, or are watching your budget. Choose Tulum if the hotel itself is part of the holiday and you’re happy to pay more for a quieter, more design-led stay. Many people split the trip: a few nights in each.

Getting there

  • To Playa del Carmen: Most visitors fly into Cancún (CUN). ADO buses run from the airport terminals to Playa del Carmen in about an hour, and private transfers take a little less.
  • To Tulum: ADO buses go direct from Cancún airport to Tulum’s bus station in about 2.5 hours. Shared shuttles and private transfers are faster but cost more; private transfers are typically around 90 to 160 US dollars per vehicle.
  • Tulum’s own airport: Tulum International Airport (TQO) opened at the end of 2023, about 40 minutes south of town. It has fewer flights than Cancún, so compare both.

Things to do from each base

From Playa del Carmen

Cozumel is the big one: ferries leave from the center of Playa and the crossing takes about 35 minutes. Cozumel is known for snorkeling and diving on its reefs. Book the Cozumel round-trip ferry (rated 4.4 from 900+ reviews).

Playa is also a common starting point for Chichén Itzá day trips. Most combine the ruins with the colonial town of Valladolid and a cenote swim, and take around 12 hours. See the Chichén Itzá day tour from Playa (rated 4.5 from 980+ reviews).

From Tulum

The Tulum ruins sit on a cliff above the sea, a short ride from town. For foreign visitors the full route costs about 265 pesos (around 14 US dollars), made up of entry to Jaguar Park, the national park and the archaeological zone, all paid separately. Go early, before the heat and the tour buses.

Tulum is also surrounded by cenotes, natural swimming holes in the limestone. A half-day tour that pairs the ruins with two cenotes is an easy first-day plan. See the ruins and cenotes tour (rated 4.4 from 1,100+ reviews).

Where to stay in Playa del Carmen

Stay within a few blocks of Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), the pedestrian street that runs parallel to the beach. North of Calle 20 is generally calmer than the busy southern end near the ferry pier.

Where to stay in Tulum

Tulum has two main areas. The beach zone (Zona Hotelera) runs along the coast road toward the Sian Ka’an reserve, with boutique hotels and beach clubs. Town and Aldea Zama are inland, with more restaurants, cheaper hotels and easier access to cenotes; you’ll need a taxi or bike to reach the beach.

Before you go

  • Staying connected: An eSIM saves you from hunting for a SIM shop on arrival. See Airalo Mexico eSIM plans
  • Seaweed: Sargassum seaweed can wash up on Riviera Maya beaches, usually in the warmer months. Check recent reports for your dates if a clear beach is your priority.
  • Cash: Some ruins and park entrances, colectivos and small shops are cash only, so carry some Mexican pesos.
  • Chichén Itzá from Tulum: If you base yourself in Tulum, there are day tours from there too. See the tour from Tulum (rated 4.6).
